New blister machine arrived, CPU 1512SP-1 PN, the builder sent the project as a zip. Plant laptop has TIA Portal V17 Update 2, Professional.
The .ap17 won't open. I get "The project was created with a newer version of TIA Portal and cannot be opened", or close to that wording. The builder says their project is V17 and nothing else, and sent a screenshot of the title bar to prove it. I extracted the zip again in case it was damaged and tried Project, Retrieve on the zap17 instead, same message both ways.
Is this a licence thing after all, or has the OEM saved it with V18 without noticing? Bit stuck between the two. Is there a way to tell from the file itself which version really saved it, before I go back to the builder and maybe be wrong?
Ask them which update level, not which version. Help, Installed software on their machine, and read the line for TIA Portal. I've had this the other way round, a customer couldn't open a project I saved after an update and I'd have sworn it was the same version.
Asked them. They're on V17 Update 6. So the update level matters as well as the version? Their screenshot only said V17.
It does. TIA opens projects from its own version and update level or lower, never higher. A project saved on V17 Update 6 won't open on V17 Update 2, and the message just says newer version because it doesn't split hairs.
On your side, install the V17 updates from the Siemens support site up to Update 6 or later, they're free and they stack in order. On their side there's nothing to do, an OEM can't save a project back down to an older update level, only to an older major version if their installation offers it, and that costs you things. Update the laptop.
Installed the updates up to Update 6 overnight, and the project opens this morning without a word.
So it came down to the update level and nothing else, the builder ahead of the plant laptop, and TIA calls that a newer version rather than saying which update it wants.
What I don't know yet is whether our other machines' projects, saved on Update 2, still open cleanly now the laptop is on Update 6. They should, going downward, I think, but I'll find out on Monday. Thanks tomhw and ollyb.
