New laptop from IT, the old one died. RSLinx Classic 4.21, Studio 5000 v33. Trying to get to the boiler house controller, a 1756-L72 with a 1756 EN2T at 192.168.1.20.
Ping to .20 replies in 1ms. RSWho under the EtherNet/IP driver shows nothing under it most of the time, and once it showed the EN2T with a red X. I deleted the driver and made it again, turned the Windows firewall off and rebooted twice, no luck, same. The old laptop worked on the same cable and the same wall port, only it was on 192.168.1.90 and IT gave this one a fixed address on 10.40.2 something.
Does the module need a firmware update to talk to the newer RSLinx? Or has IT put this laptop somewhere the EN2T can't answer from, I'm not sure how much that 10.40.2 address matters.
Nothing wrong with the module. Ping works, that's layer 3 and it goes through the router. RSWho with the EtherNet/IP driver finds modules by broadcast on the laptop's own subnet, and your laptop is on 10.40.2.x, so the broadcast never leaves that subnet. Old laptop was on 192.168.1.x. What's between the wall port and the EN2T, a router or a layer 3 switch?
Switch model? If it's an L3 core with the two VLANs routed, I think Bill's right, broadcast stops at the SVI. Wireshark on the laptop would show your List Identity going out and nothing coming back.
Some Cisco thing in the IT room, they won't tell me the model. So the ping goes through but the browse doesn't. Fine. What do I do about it, IT won't put me back on 192.168.1.

Close enough. Two ways. In RSLinx, Communications, Configure Drivers, add an Ethernet devices driver instead of EtherNet removed link That one doesn't browse, you type the IP into the station list, 192.168.1.20, and it goes through the router like ping does. Then in Studio, Who Active, the module shows under that driver. Second way is what I'd do on a plant laptop: a USB Ethernet dongle on 192.168.1.90 for the plant side and leave IT's port alone. So, laptop on a routed subnet, the EtherNet/IP driver browses by broadcast and never saw the module. Ping went through the router, browse did not. Ethernet devices driver with the IP typed in and it's fine.
One thing. The old laptop was on 192.168.1.90 and IT says that range was never theirs. So somebody set it that way years ago and IT never noticed. I'm not telling them. Thanks billr, petek.
