Commissioning a dosing skid at a customer site. Their 1214C died over the weekend and the store handed me a spare that's been sitting on the shelf for years. Project is TIA V17, CPU configured as a 1214C V4.4.
Load to device stops on a message that the firmware version of the device is lower than the configured version. The spare says V2.2 on the side label, I think, the print is half worn off. I tried the extended download and got the same thing, and someone here told me to reinstall TIA, which I'm not doing on a site laptop with no internet.
So can I just change the device version in the project down to V2.2 and go, or does the old CPU want a firmware update first? I've got a card reader with me. If it's the card route I'd rather find that out now, the site laptop has no internet on it.
Is the card write protected? I had that on my bench rig last month and the message looked a lot like yours.
Card's fine, checked it twice, and its the version the message is unhappy about, not the card. The slider is where it should be.
Configured version can never be higher than what the CPU actually runs. Two paths.
Right click the CPU in Devices & networks, Change device version, pick the version on the label. If the list only offers V4.x, the spare is the older hardware, order number ending AG31 rather than AG40, and if I remember right the AG31 hardware doesn't take V4 firmware at all. Then it's Change device instead, and pick the 1214C with the AG31 order number at V2.2. Expect a few instructions to complain on compile.
Second path, only if the order number is AG40: firmware update via card from the Siemens support download, then leave the project alone.
Order number is 6ES7 214-1AG31-0XB0. Change device version only lists V4.0 to V4.5, so it's the first path. Doing Change device now, and compile is throwing errors on two blocks that use newer instructions.
Expected. Rework those two for V2.2 and it runs, same CPU underneath.

Running since last night. The spare is AG31 hardware at V2.2, the project wanted V4.4, and that hardware can't go to V4 at all. Change device to the AG31 order number at V2.2, then two blocks rewritten, one used MOVE_BLK_VARIANT and one a newer string instruction.
The customer's store had the spare labelled as the same part as the dead one, which is how I lost a day on it. A proper AG40 is on order and I'll swap the project back to V4.4 when it turns up, if they let me on site again. Thanks hkraus.
