Rebuilt the main chassis on our sheeter over the weekend. The old 13 slot chassis had a cracked backplane connector, so it's a new 1756-A13 and I moved every module across in the order the drawing shows, 1756-L71S, the L7SP partner, the EN2T, then the I removed link

Powered up and the primary OK LED flashes red, the display says safety partner missing, and the L7SP's own OK LED is solid red. The partner is right there in the chassis.

I power cycled twice, pulled and reseated the L7SP and then the primary, and went online, where the Safety tab says the partner is missing.

Programming laptop has v31. Not sure if it lost firmware in the move or is just dead, could anyone point me in the right direction?

What slot is the L7SP sitting in now, count from the left with the power supply not counted. And what slot was it in on the old chassis. Also is there anything between the primary and the partner, even an empty slot.

Primary in slot 0. Partner in slot 2. Slot 1 is empty, the drawing had a spare there so I left it open. On the old chassis I honestly did not look, I went by the drawing.

Slot 1 is your problem, not firmware. The partner has to sit in the slot directly to the right of the primary. Did the drawing really show a gap between them?

Drawing shows L71S slot 0, spare slot 1, L7SP slot 2. Looks like the drawing was wrong or was for another rack. Someone on day shift says the partner was always next to the controller.

then the drawing is wrong and the old chassis was right. The 1756-L7SP is not a normal module, it works with the primary as a pair and it has to be in the slot immediately to the right of the L71S. If I remember right the partner does not even get its own entry in the I/O tree, it just has to be there. An empty slot between them and the primary reports safety partner missing exactly like you see.

Power down, move the L7SP to slot 1. Power up. The pair should come up on its own, the partner takes its firmware from the primary if it needs to. Then fix the drawing.

Moved the partner to slot 1 this morning. Powered up, primary went to solid green after about a minute, partner OK LED green, safety tab shows the partner present and the safety task running. Sheeter running.

Partner was never dead and it never lost any firmware. It has to sit in the slot right beside the primary, and one empty slot between them was enough for the L71S to call it missing. Moved it one slot left and the pair came up on their own.

Still don't know why the drawing shows a spare in slot 1. Marked it up in red for now. Thanks rsdave and garyb.

Photo of the old rack before you pull anything. Got me once too.
